Diary Entry For October 12, 2008
I'm hanging out in front of one of Nor-Tech's latest creations, The Sealed Cluster. This is basically a portable super computer that can be operated while totally sealed which comes in very handy in harsh environments. The military buys a bunch of units that are similar to these to be used on their unmanned aerial vehicles. I'm creating a marketing plan to sell these to people who want to play really cool video games while located outside during the middle of a major hurricane. At roughly $60,000 apiece, I think we'll sell thousands of these into that burgeoning marketplace!
So I'm hanging out at work on Friday, when I suddenly notice three wild turkeys walking along the fence across the street. I can remember a day not too long ago when I had never seen a turkey that wasn't on a farm, but these days they seem to be everywhere! However this was the first time I could stalk a few of them with my camera, so naturally I had to give chase!
I had the birds cornered in the fence and ran back and forth for a while which seemed to kind of stress them out. Eventually I felt bad, so I stopped and let them run away. Those darned turkeys are fast when they're a little bit nervous!
We're back in full swing with Cub Scouts this year. Unfortunately, our previous Den Leader and Good Friend, Joey, moved away. So the den asked if I could take over which made me a little nervous because I've always considered myself a bit too "warped" to be a leader of such fine young men as those in our den. Luckily, we have an awesome group of parents who step up to do most of the work. Basically, all I have to do is stand there and wear the funny shirt!
On Wednesday night, the Dragon Patrol got together again to do the Cub Scouts' annual Food Drive! It was a lot of fun watching the boys sneak up to our neighbor's doors in the dark of night and place grocery bags with food requests around their door knobs. I tried to convince some of the boys to ring the doorbell and then we'd all run away, but no one seemed to want to play that game.
Despite my desire to play tricks on my neighbors, it sure didn't dissuade them from being extremely generous with their food donations. Our den alone collected more than 25 bags of food which I thought was a great success! I was curious if people would be willing to give considering all the craziness happening in the economy today, but was pleasantly surprised. It makes me dang proud to be an American!
On Friday night, we went to the brand new movie theater by the Burnsville Mall called Cinemagic Atlantis 15. I was very impressed by the majestic statues that welcome viewers in the lobby. Eventually, they're also going to have a full service restaurant and bar as well, but that is not open to the public yet. The venue comes across as being very extravagant for a movie theater. They even give free refills on pop, which comes in quite handy after being bent over and beaten in the stock market for the past 6 weeks!
We saw the movie City of Ember. We hadn't heard too much about it, but were pleasantly surprised by this sci fi action adventure movie featuring Tim Robbins and Bill Murray. I'm giving it One Big Thumb Up for being a fun family film. I'm also giving One Big Thumb down to the family who sat in the row behind us and talked throughout the entire dang movie!

Shortarmguy's Favorite Websites October 12, 2008 White box builders and system integrators were less concerned with the manufacturing implications of AMD (NYSE:AMD)'s big move and more interested in the potential for a streamlined AMD to deliver competitive hardware products. Calling the ATIC deal "a smart move," Todd Swank, VP of marketing at Burnsville, Minn.-based Nor-Tech, said AMD would now be free to focus on what it does best, which is design new chips. "New fabs are very, very expensive," Swank said. "And AMD is going against a competitor with all the money in the world. This gives them flexibility, and keeps them from being tied up with all those fixed costs." Nor-Tech's business with AMD isn't as brisk as it was three years ago, but Swank said he was encouraged by their current roadmap. "We just introduced a portable server cluster using their Barcelona chips. So we expect good things from them going forward," he said. Market, Partners Positive On 'Fabless' AMD, CRN, October 7, 2008
