Diary Entry For September 7, 2008

The Republicans are coming!  The Republicans are coming!  Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that the Republican National Convention was held in St. Paul, Minnesota this week.  Although we weren't amongst the lucky folks who were at the Xcel Energy Center for the actual convetion, we were fortunate to attend Civic Fest 2008 in Minneapolis.

Civic Fest was a first time event in the Twin Cities and was basically a celebration of all the previous US presidents.  This exhibit was actually once part of Richard Nixon's Air Force One airplane!  I thought it was really cool!!  Then I noticed the hidden microphones recording everything we were saying....

Abe Lincoln seemed like a nice guy.  I thanked him for freeing the slaves and he mumbled something I couldn't understand in response.  I thought he was saying something about Sarah Palin having nice legs, but I just can't be sure.

The most popular exhibit by far was the Miniature White House.   This very impressive structure is 55 feet long, 20 feet wide, and features very detailed renderings of every nook and cranny of the White House as it stands today.   We had to wait in line for 45 minutes before seeing it and were feeling quite mischievous by the time we came close to it.  So now the exhibit shows the mini George Bush doll dunking the head of the mini Dick Cheney doll into a mini toilet.  I'm sure that happens in real life all the time anyways.

On Friday night, we had the honor of going to dinner at our friends, Karl and Tina's house.  Karl showed himself to be quite the Chef when he served us Cedar Plank Salmon which he cooked on the grill on top of a really big board.  It tasted delicious!  It was so good that I'm going to start integrating lumber into a lot more of my dietary choices!

Now that Labor Day is behind us, we know we have a limited number of nice weekends left so we're trying to make the most of it.  We pulled the bikes out of storage and figured we'd give it a shot to whittle down my belly while we still have the chance to exercise.

The bike rides are a lot of fun, but definitely a reminder of how out of shape I've become.  I do pretty good going down hills, but the rest of the ride is a bit of a struggle.

We also enjoyed our first "real" round of golf with the boys this weekend.

Avery shocked mom and dad when he legitimately beat the both of us on the course's third hole.  I told him that would now be the end of his golf career until he's able to drive to the golf course by himself.

Both of the boys made me quite proud when they demonstrated that they knew the value of keeping their balls washed.  I was quite a bit older when I finally learned that lesson.

Nice Emails of the Week

Dude ~ love your site!!  I just saw the Miami Ink episode you were featured on, and I just had to check out your site…awesome!  I love your viewpoint of your “differences” from most people.  Sorry if that wasn’t “politically correct”, but something tells me you will get over it if it wasn’t!!

 I’m sure you have been asked this so many times that you just roll your eyes now, but I’ve got to ask anyways…see, my mom has been a nurse all my life ~ she works in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a rather prominent hospital in our area…so I have grown up hearing about all the babies she has taken care of, what’s “wrong” with them, various syndromes that are recognized, blah blah blah…you know where I am going with this, don’t you?  So are your features the result of Thalidomide, or was there just simply not enough clay to go around?  Just curious…my son’s pediatrician is a “Thalidomide baby”, and I actually am looking forward to the day when he starts asking why Dr. Ford’s arms are different so that he will see that there are no boundaries except the ones you place on yourself…

Ok, getting a little deep here, and all I wanted to do was say that I like your website…I’ll be exploring it a bit more, but it’s late now & I’m going to bed.  Good night, and thanks for putting a true smile on my face!

Regards,

Jillian

The Election is Really Starting to Get Fun!

Actual Life Magazine cover in 2004!  Just a little bit prescient I'd say!

Jokes of the Week

History.. Truth, Good & Useful  ~ The Test of Three....

In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance, who ran up to him excitedly and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students...?"

 "Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me, I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Test of Three."

 "Test of Three?"

 "That's correct," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to test what you're going to say. The first test is Truth. Are absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

 "No," the man replied, "actually I just heard about it."

 "All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second test, the test of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?"

 "No, on the contrary..."

 "So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him even though you're not certain it's true?"

 The man shrugged, a little embarrassed.

 Socrates continued, "You may still pass though because there is a third test - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?"

 "No, not really..."

 "Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?"

 The man was defeated and ashamed and said no more.

 This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem. It also explains why Socrates never found out that Plato was banging his wife.

Shortarmguy's Emails To Make You Think

September 7, 2008

The following stats come from an article by Glen Beck of CNN.

What do the top ten cities with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Democrat leadership.

Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961;
Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected one since 1954;
Cincinnati, OH (3rd)... since 1984;
Cleveland, OH (4th)... since 1989;
Miami, FL (5th) has never had a Republican Mayor;
St. Louis, MO (6th).... since 1949;
El Paso, TX (7th) has never had a Republican Mayor;
Milwaukee, WI (8th)... since 1908;
Philadelphia, PA (9th)... since 1952;
Newark, NJ(10th)... since 1907.

Einstein once said "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

It is the disadvantaged who habitually elect Democrats - yet are still disadvantaged... hmmm...

I don't mean to piss anyone off by posting this, but it did make me think!
