The Snow Tunnels

Shortarmguy and the Snow Tunnels January 10, 2010
It’s been really cold in Minnesota the past few weeks. We’ve been hanging out between 10 and 20 degrees below zero for a long stretch of time. The boys and I finally decided we needed to get some fresh air and thought a walk on the lake would be fun. That lasted about 5 minutes before we decided it was too cold and we all wanted to go back inside. Sunny don’t care about the cold, though. He’s going to run all he can while we’re there.
On New Year’s Day, we went to see the Minnesota Timberwolves take on the Orlando Magic down at the Target Center. It was our first NBA game of the year. And based on the amount of fun we had, it was probably our last game of the year as well.
It started off great. We’d loaded up with snacks and were excited to connect with our old buddy, Cathy. We braced ourselves for some fast paced action on the court!! It was pretty much all down hill from there, though.
Nothing against the Wolves. They’re doing all they can to put on a good show. It’s just that we used to go to a lot of games when we had Kevin Garnett on the team and that kind of set the bar pretty high for us. Al Jefferson and Kevin Love just aren’t quite up to that level yet.
The Magic moved the ball at will over the inexperienced home team and won the game by a score of 106 to 94. The Wolves are now sporting a record of 8 and 30 and struggling to sell tickets. We did appreciate the opportunity to go to the game, though. It sure beats hanging out on an ice covered lake letting 30 degree below zero wind chills bounce off your face!
Cathy’s not really into basketball. Luckily for her, she has a real knack for entertaining herself by pretending to eat an imaginary subway sandwich whenever she gets really bored. I have to admit, after awhile I really wanted a bite of that sandwich!
Today it warmed up to a balmy 8 degrees outside, so the boys went out and played for several hours. They’ve been carving a series of tunnels into a big snow drift in our yard. It looks like a lot of fun to crawl through if I just weren’t too fat to crawl through it!
I swear Avery must be part ground squirrel the way he digs these tunnels. I have to think he’s causing some damage to his teeth chewing through all that ice and snow!!
I was really quite impressed with the intricate series of tunnels they made. They have five entrances and caves long enough for both of them to fit inside at the same time! I just can’t wait until this summer to see what they’ll be able to do once it’s warm enough for them to spend more time outside working on them!
