Diary Entry For May 17, 2009

We celebrated Mother’s Day by taking Miss Sheri out for breakfast to a local restaurant called Hooligans.  She seemed pretty happy at all the special attention.  We were pretty happy about the pancakes.

After 10 years of thinking about it, I finally took the plunge and had laser eye surgery on both of my eyes.  It was a pretty bizarre experience.  I can’t say that it hurts, but it’s somewhat stressful because you’re wide awake while they do it.  You hear the machine as it opens a flap of tissue on your cornea and smell burning flesh as they laser the eye into it’s new shape.  I kept thinking that if I’d wanted to I could shake my head back and forth while they were operating, but luckily was able to control the temptation!

This is the surgeon, Dr. David Whiting.  He was a very nice guy and has performed more than 80,000 laser vision surgeries in his career!  I wish I’d had a chance to get to know him a little better, but the entire process happened in less than a half hour.  I had my eyes wedged open with a big ring for about half of that time, so I didn’t feel real talkative!

This photo was taken about 5 days after the surgery.  When people ask me if I’m happy I did it, I say the juries still out for me.  Although I definitely can see more clearly far away, I’m still experiencing a fair amount of blurriness and fluctuating vision even as I write this six days later.  The doctor told me this is a normal part of the healing process and things will hopefully clear up in a couple of weeks.  He also said it may take 3 to 6 months before I’ll see my best vision from the procedure.  I have to keep my eyes moisturized with drops a lot and this is supposed to help them to heal.  I’m going a little bit crazy because in a lot of ways I see worse now than I did before with glasses.  I’m hoping the doctor is right and that things will improve!  Otherwise I’m going to ask them for my old eyes back.

On Saturday, we went to Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis for a kid’s fishing extravaganza!

The temperature said 50 degrees, but the brisk wind made it feel a lot colder.  Miss Sheri was pretty thrilled to be fishing in this wonderful Minnesota Spring Weather!

We were there by the invitation of our good friends, The Frechette Family.  Judging by young Jack in the back, I think they were a little cold as well!

The boys and I weren’t going to let being cold stop us from bringing in some big fish, though.  I started baiting the hooks by using some of the worms that were provided to us.  One of the moms told me that I should only use half a worm which seemed a little cruel to me.  I try to teach my boys not to rip animals in half, but since this was a special occasion we let that rule slide for the day.

Avery was pretty intense as he tried to land a big one.

Luke and Miss Sheri also gave it their best effort, but unfortunately none of us brought in a fish.  It probably didn’t help that after only about a half hour of freezing our butts off we said, “OK, enough of this.”  But at least we had fun for the moment!

Microsoft has learned much from the Vista experience and has been laser focused on avoiding a repeat with Windows 7, says Todd Swank, vice president of marketing at Nor-Tech, a Burnsville, Minn.-based system builder.

“I think they heard the resounding feedback from customers who decided to stay with XP, and I don’t think we’ll see compatibility problems in Windows 7 environments,” Swank said.

Call Before You Dig!

Pay attention to the law in the USA requiring you to call for utility locating before you do any excavation.

The pictures below are a result of a farmer using a post hole digger without calling for “locales” and he hit a high-pressure cross country gas pipe.

They never did find the guy. Took out 2 homes.

What a great idea! I have not tried it but I will ….I try not to drive in any kind of bad weather but I do have sun glasses and I will try it.

GOOD VISION IN A DOWNPOUR

How to achieve good vision while  driving during a heavy downpour. I can vouch for this!!   We are not sure why it is so  effective; just try this method when it rains heavily.   This method was told by a Police  friend who had experienced and confirmed it.  It is useful…even driving at night.

Most of the motorists would turn on HIGH or FASTEST SPEED of the wipers during heavy downpour, yet the visibility in front of the windscreen is still bad…….

In the event you face such a situation, just try your SUN GLASSES (any model will do), and miracle!   All of a sudden, your visibility in front of your windscreen is perfectly clear, as if there is  no rain.

Make sure you always have a pair of SUN GLASSES in your car, as you are not only helping yourself to drive safely with good vision, but also might save your friend’s life by giving him this idea..

Try it yourself and share it with your friends.
